At the turn of the century Carry Nation took up temperance reform with a vengeance.
She began by marching into bars in her Kansas hometown and singing temperance hymns until she forced all the saloons to close.
Then she expanded her efforts, marching into bars throughout the state, swinging a hatchet or throwing bricks, and destroying everything within reach in what became known as a “hatchetation.”
She argued that she had the right to do this because Kansas had a law banning the sale of liquor, even though no one enforced it.
Many people dismissed her as crazy, but she did generate a lot of publicity for the temperance cause.
