Illegal drug use can be a problem for people with OCD if they turn to drugs as a way to try to drown out their obsessions.
Some people turn to using illegal drugs as a way to try to handle their OCD instead of seeking therapy or legal medications.
This can happen for several reasons, they may be too embarrassed to talk to anyone about their fears, or they may feel as if they are the only person with this problem, and therefore no one could help them anyway.
If you know someone who has OCD and is using illegal drugs as a way to try to handle his or her difficulties, please try to get that person to seek professional help.
The first line of therapy will be to get the individual to break his or her addiction to illegal drugs, and then the correct medications can be prescribed, and/or a course of therapy can be begun, which can be far more successful in treating their OCD than the person’s illegal drug use ever was or will be.
