In the early 1980s there was only one woman senator, Nancy Kassebaum of Kansas.
In 1987 she was joined by Barbara Mikulski, the first woman senator from Maryland. Rearm Ros-Lehtinen of Florida became the first Cuban American elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, in 1989.
In 1989 there were twenty-six women representatives, the highest number ever. There were still, however, more than sixteen times as many men.
