In the northern plains a Native American woman now known as Woman Chief saved a group of Crow and white families from a Blackfoot attack in the 1840s.
Born to a Gros Ventre family in the early 1800s, she was captured by the Crow at age 10.
Her adoptive father taught her to kill buffalo, and she took his place as the family head when he died.
After halting the Blackfoot raid, she was honored as a Crow warrior and led several successful attacks on Blackfoot enemies. She was also invited to sit on the Council of Chiefs.
During the 1850s she helped create peace among the tribes of the upper Missouri, but the peace lasted only a few years.
In 1858 she was killed in an ambush by her original people, the Gros Ventre.
