What Is the Epicenter of an Earthquake and How Is It Located?

Earthquakes begin inside Earth and the energy ripples outward in all directions: toward the surface, toward Earth’s core, and all around.

If the earthquake’s energy reaches the surface, that point of surfacing is called the epicenter.

Most earthquake damage is caused by waves on the surface of Earth, not underground.
