Living gluten-free doesn’t stop with avoiding foods with gluten. It’s also important to be mindful of dental hygiene products when you visit the dentist. While most dental products are gluten-free, some may not be, so you need to double-check with your dentist. To be safe, call your dentist several days before your next visit to let them know you are gluten intolerant and you would like them to research the gluten-free status of the products they will be using on you. They may be unfamiliar with gluten and could call the product manufacturers to confirm, which could take some time.
Aside from the products used in cleaning and other procedures, be watchful of gloves. Although most would be coated in corn starch, some latex or vinyl gloves may be coated with oat flour and it will not be pure oat flour, but contaminated oat flour. Ask your dentist to use non-powdered gloves to be safe.
