Many employers strictly limit the number of absences that an employee is allowed, no matter what the reason is.
Employers that require a doctor’s note for an illness are usually doing so to make sure that sick days are used for legitimate illnesses. There are some circumstances where a sick employee does have some protection from termination, in the area of disabilities and workers compensation injuries, which will be discussed later.
However, a doctor’s note does not offer any protection from termination. Also, employees who are terminated for excessive absenteeism may have problems obtaining unemployment benefits.
