At age 18 Belle Boyd began flirting with Union soldiers to gain information for the Confederates.
She was imprisoned several times but kept on spying.
In 1864 she was en route to England when her ship was stopped, but she promptly won the heart of her Union captor and married him in England.
She later became an actress.
Using flattery, Rose Greenhow learned about the Union forces’ plans and helped give the Confederates the winning edge at the first battle of Bull Run. When imprisoned, she still found ways to send information to Confederate officers.
In the South she was honored as a hero and eventually paid $2,500 for her services.
