Finding an experienced physician or mental health professional with expertise in evaluating Asperger’s Disorder is one of the most important decisions you will make as a parent. Some parents shy away from professionals who specialize in Asperger’s Disorder, believing the expert will see the disorder in every child. This fear results in evaluations performed by less experienced professionals unfamiliar with Asperger’s Disorder. Experts in Asperger’s Disorder do not diagnose Asperger’s Disorder simply because that is their expertise. They have seen numerous children with Asperger’s Disorder and have seen the infinite number of ways the symptoms manifest. An expert professional provides the best opportunity to obtain an accurate evaluation.
Referrals from others are the best way to find an expert. Seek out agencies and professionals that have special knowledge about Asperger’s Disorder. Ask people you know for a recommendation. Your child’s teacher, principal, and pediatrician are likely good sources for recommendations. Parents with children already diagnosed with Asperger’s Disorder are usually excellent resources for referrals. Awareness of Asperger’s Disorder is growing, and the Internet provides easy access to information and can be a good source to find local and national Asperger’s Disorder organizations which may lead you to specialists.
