It’s hard to estimate how many counterfeit paintings are circulating in the world, but a number of works have been found to be either deliberately counterfeited or misattributed.
For example, of the 600 paintings called “Rembrandts,” experts believe that as many as half are counterfeit.
Pablo Picasso was surprisingly practical about the fact that there were original Picasso available for sale that he had never seen.
Said he: “If I like it, I say it’s genuine. If I don’t like it, I say it’s a fake.”
