You can demo things, which is short for demolition or demolish. As long as you avoid support walls necessary for holding up the roof or the upper floors, you can swing a sledge hammer to your heart’s content.
If it has to be done, you might as well be the one doing it. It can be fun, you will save money, and you can tell fun stories like all the real construction professionals.
One word of advice, though. Old vinyl tile squares are usually a whole lot harder to remove than you might think. I recommend leaving that work to professionals.
