Scratch and dent items are exactly as described. Usually appliances or cabinets, they have some sort of cosmetic damage that does not affect functionality. On my last flip, all my appliances had major blemishes on the sides. I did not care, though, because they were all flanked by cabinets or by walls. No one would ever see the defects. I saved about 60% off the normal list prices.
Check with appliance stores and home improvement stores in your area to find out who typically offers scratch and dent merchandise. After that, it is a simple matter to keep track of their sale schedules. With luck, you will find a friendly vendor who agrees to let you store the items in its warehouse, free of charge, until you are ready for installation.
In addition, some stores sell only damaged merchandise. My own mother owned such a store while I was in college, to help pay for college expenses. She purchased items from JC Penney, usually things that had been damaged in shipment. Some she repaired and some she sold “as is,” but the buyers always received a large discount.
