Each parent has certain behaviors they will not tolerate as well as ones they are not concerned with. Some parents will not tolerate talking back while others cannot accept a messy room. Because Asperger’s Disorder children engage in so many inappropriate behaviors, it is impossible to set a consequence for them all. Even if you tried, you would be unable to point out to your child each of his misbehaviors. Sometimes your child will be simultaneously engaging in so many inappropriate actions that you won’t know which one to tell him to stop.
Instead, you must determine which behaviors and tasks you believe are the most important. You have to choose your battles. It is easier to first make a list of which behaviors and tasks you can let go. A clean room should be on the top of the list of behaviors to give up.
Topping the list of behaviors that all children should do include brushing teeth, bathing, going to school, and doing some homework. Behaviors that all children should be disciplined for include physical violence, property destruction, cursing, and threats of violence.
