If you believe that you are being discriminated against on the basis of race, color, ethnic origin, nationality, religion, sex, familial status, or disability, you have the right to file a complaint with your state and with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). HUD’s Office of Fair Housing has a toll-free hotline for reporting incidents of discrimination at 800-669-9777 (800-927-9275 for the hearing impaired).
Your state may also have a local government agency that deals with housing discrimination. In most states, the local agency is part of the human rights department. All states have a website devoted to the assistance provided to the residents by the state.
Housing discrimination is no joke, nor should it be common practice anywhere in the United States. These illegal practices should never be tolerated, no matter what. The excuse of, “we have always done it that way,” does not absolve anyone, especially a real estate professional, from discriminating against another person.
