Gary Larson graduated from Washington State University in 1972 with a degree in communications and had several jobs before his Far Side cartoon series took off.
In one job he acted as an animal cruelty investigator for the Seattle Humane Society.
Right before his first big sell to the San Francisco Chronicle, Larson was pursuing a career as a jazz guitarist.
Larson was working in a music store when he realized how much he hated his job, and decided to try cartooning.
He drew six cartoons and submitted them to a Seattle based magazine.
Since then, 23 books which feature the Far Side cartoon have had combined sales of more than 45 million copies.
