The way in which a flamingo eats is unusual.
It lowers its head into the water so that its beak is submerged upside down.
It then swishes its beak back and forth, using its large tongue to sort out the food from the water.
It’s the only known animal to eat in this way.
Flamingos filter feed on brine shrimp and blue-green algae, and the filtering of food is assisted by hairy structures and the large tongue which has a rough surface.
