You are performing the ritual to try to feel safe because you fear the obsessive thought, impulse, or image.
This safety-seeking behavior is what will maintain your OCD because after a while, you will feel as if the only way to be safe is to perform the ritual. Then you will feel stuck, because now not performing the ritual would be unsafe, and no one wants to put himor herself in an unsafe position.
In order to see improvement, you have to start to decrease your safety-seeking behavior and start to expose yourself to the things that you fear without doing rituals.
Once you do this and recognize that the feared consequences will not occur, you will probably see a decrease in your OCD.
