The exclamation “Jesus H. Christ!” is often used as an attempt to avoid a blasphemous curse.
Of course, even though it still takes the Christian Lord’s name in vain, it is usually accepted as a joke.
The epithet is based on “HIS” or “IHC,” which is an abbreviation of Jesus’s name in ancient Greek and is common in the earliest versions of the New Testament.
It is still found on Catholic and Anglican vestments.
The exclamation came from the misconception that these were Jesus’s initials.
