Much like the EEOC, the federal DOL enforces the labor laws that are enacted by the federal government and apply to all states. The state’s Department of Labor will enforce those state laws.
State Department of Labor offices can vary in what they do. In a large state that has many of its own laws, the state DOL can have its hands full just enforcing the state’s labor laws. In other states, the state DOL office can range from merely a conduit that assists workers in obtaining benefits from other departments, to an all-in-one department that handles all employee-employer issues.
