A villain from the 1926 movie the Bat was the inspiration for Batman.
Creator Bob Kane was taken with the bat costume but wanted his character to be like his literary hero, Sherlock Holmes.
He put Holmes in a bat costume and created a comic strip hit.
Also known as “The Dark Knight”, Batman’s secret identity is Bruce Wayne, and fights an assortment of villains such as the Joker, the Penguin, Poison Ivy, Two-Face, and Catwoman.
Batman became even more popular after the Batman television series, starring Adam West, premiered in January 1966 on the ABC television network.
