Depending on the substance, there are a number of on label (FDA approved) and off label strategies currently being used, with varying success rates.
• For nicotine dependence (cigarettes in particular), which has a high relapse rate, available medications include nicotine replacement (gum, patches) and medications to try and decrease craving, such as buproprion (Zyban, Wellbutrin) and varenicline (Chantix).
• For the treatment of cocaine dependence and craving, there are currently no FDA-approved medications. However, a number of off label approaches are being studied. Medications that may have some benefit include: topiramate (Topamax), modafinil (Provigil), disulfiram (Antabuse), amantadine (Symmetrel), Baclofen (currently being studied), buproprion (Wellbutrin), and other antidepressants.
