Regulation requirements can vary widely from community to community. At a minimum, you may be required to obtain a construction permit, even for very minor structural, electrical, or plumbing repairs or renovations. You can go to the Permit Place website at www.permitplace.com for more information, although it does not provide an exhaustive list. You should also call your local permit office. Start with your city hall, or your county or parish government if you are not inside city limits, and ask for guidance and other phone numbers. You might have overlapping jurisdictions for requirements, such as:
• inside city limits;
• outside city limits but inside the police jurisdiction;
• outside both, but subject to county/parish rules;
• regional planning, zoning, and permitting authorities; or,
• special “overlay” districts that cover portions of several municipalities.
It is very important to find out the exact requirements because the permitting and the building standard costs could significantly alter your budget.
