The comic strip Cathy was based on her creator, Cathy Guisewite.
The story goes that at the age of 26, she was miserable and 50 pounds overweight.
While waiting for a date to call, she began to doodle pathetic, self-loathing caricatures of herself eating and waiting by the phone.
After several years of self-effacing doodles, she put them into comic strip form and submitted them to United Press Syndicate.
The timing was good, women’s issues were hot, so UPS bought the strip and named it “Cathy” after its creator.
