Already popular in newspaper comics, Popeye made a guest appearance in an early 1930s “Betty Boop” short film.
His animated career took off, and it was only a few years before he picked up his first Oscar.
That was for his 1936 performance in Sinbad the Sailor.
Popeye first appeared in the daily King Features comic strip Thimble Theater in 1929, and is depicted as having only one eye and superhuman strength after eating a can of spinach.
The success of Popeye as a comic strip character has led to appearances in movies, television cartoons, and video games.
