The answer about disclosure in the workplace is a personal one. Your decision to disclose to some, or all, of your colleagues will be based on several factors:
• Will disclosure increase or decrease your perceived level of stress at work?
• Will disclosure enhance your effectiveness at your job? For instance, someone working in the mental health profession who discloses her own bipolar disorder could achieve an added credibility when working with colleagues and people with mental illnesses.
• Is there a particular reason why disclosure, perhaps to your immediate supervisor, is necessary? Following a manic episode there may be behavioral events that occurred in the workplace that need to be addressed. In some circumstances, but not all, disclosure might help reframe what happened in a less negative manner.
• Is disclosure necessary in order to obtain accommodation(s) on the job under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?
