The term heebie jeebies was coined in the early 1940s by Cartoonist Billy DeBeck,
DeBeck created the long-running American comic strip Barney Google and Snuffy Smith.
He also added sweet mama and horse feathers to the American vernacular.
The expression heebie jeebies is an American English idiom used to describe depression or anxiety, which may be caused by drinking too much beer.
The term first appeared in a DeBeck cartoon, in the October edition of the New York American in 1923.
“You dumb ox, why don’t you get that stupid look offa your pan, you gimme the heeby jeebys!”
