The name for the white rhino comes from the Dutch word weit, which means “wide”.
These large, bulky but quick animals have a wide, square muzzle that’s specialized for grazing.
But don’t tell the plush-toy manufacturers.
They’ve enjoyed decades of selling snow-white toy rhinos to unsuspecting consumers.
The White Rhinoceros is also known as the Square-lipped rhinoceros, and is one of the few megafaunal species left.
One of the the most social of all rhino species, the white rhino is believed to be descended from Ceratotherium praecox which lived around 7 million years ago.
