Marketed as a “Golden Sponge Cake with Creamy Filling”, Twinkies were originally filled with banana cream.
But bananas were rationed during World War II, and Hostess was forced to switch to vanilla cream.
The new vanilla Twinkies proved so popular that they never switched back to banana.
Twinkies don’t last forever.
Yes, their low water content and airtight packaging make them longer-lasting than most baked goods, but the Hostess company allows Twinkies to stay on shelves for just a few weeks.
