The phrase “There’s a sucker born every minute” is commonly attributed to showman P. T. Barnum, but there is no evidence that he ever said it.
On the other hand, Barmum is responsible for coining many other well-known phrases and terms. “Jumbo” was the name of the huge elephant in his sideshow act, and the name came to represent anything oversized.
“Grandstand” referred to the more prominent seats in the stands and is now used as a verb meaning to attempt to impress an audience.
Other Barnum phrases include “Siamese twins,” “let’s get the show on the road,” and “rain or shine.”
