Rumors has it that birdseed is thrown at weddings instead of rice because when birds eat uncooked rice, their stomachs explode and they die.
This isn’t true, however. A bird’s stomach is made to crunch up hard things.
It’s filled with grit, swallowed stones and gravel, along with strong muscles to help grind up seeds and grains.
If you can entice a bird to eat uncooked rice grains, it won’t get sick and its stomach definitely won’t explode.
The exploding-bird-stomach myth may well have been planted by church custodians.
Birds aren’t too enthusiastic about eating rice, so the grains are often left all over the front area of a church after a wedding, needing to be cleaned up.
But birds naturally and quickly take care of the mess left by birdseed.
